The most important thing the author wants readers to gain from her books:
A good non-fiction story should be more than just a bunch of facts. Non-fiction stories should be fun and entertaining. That's exactly what I try to do with every Little Katie book. Each book in the series is designed with two things in mind. First, to teach in a fun, imaginative way that can be used at home or in the classroom. Second, to inspire young girls (and boys too!) to look at science and see themselves in this field. They can do anything they set their mind to.
Why the author is an authority on the subject of her books:
Having a background in the Arts and spending hundreds of hours researching each topic I write about, I am well educated and situated to answer questions students have on the subject we are discussing. Just as with my stories, I consider and approach topics in a fun, creative way, drawing from everyday examples to help young readers better grasp the material at hand.
Speaking Engagements and School Presentations:
During a visit, I enjoy creating an experience for the children that is centered around creativity and imagination. I'm repeatedly told how after I leave a class the students are more excited to read and write than ever before. I believe this is due largely in part to including everyone and answering every question that is asked (even the questions that aren't questions, ha-ha!).
My visits consist of readings followed by a question and answer period, then a fun, engaging activity. I work one on one with teachers before my visit to address what their students are working on in class, and then we create a custom activity to best suit the needs of the students. However, if preferred, I've also done presentations on drawing (going from simple shapes to finalized characters), the basics of writing and character development, and school assemblies.
