Tales & Legends from the Ancient & Medieval Worlds
I’m a retired high school English teacher who taught for 25 years. A devourer of books growing up, my profession introduced me to writings and authors from times long past. Through my studies and teaching, I fell in love with the Ancient and Medieval Worlds. Now, I hope to inspire young readers and those Young-at-Heart to read more through my Tales and Legends for Reluctant Readers set in these worlds - Ancient Egypt, Medieval Wales, and coming soon, a hair-raising adventure through ancient worlds in search of five rare Phoenix Feathers.
All of my books come with free study guides and/or extensive Back-of-the-Book materials.
The most important thing the author wants readers to gain from her books:
Using stories set in time periods that appeal to all, I hope that readers will find a piece of themselves in my characters and their situations.
Why the author is an authority on the subject of her books:
I taught Arthurian Legend at the high school level for over 20 years. I also taught the literature of the ancient worlds in that same timeframe. As for Arthurian Legend, my experience in the classroom: Students that I couldn't get to read anything devoured the unit on King Arthur.
I've conducted Medieval Writing (half-day) Workshops for the Colorado Girl Scouts. I am a frequent visitor to elementary/middle schools with my Medieval workshops.
Speaking Engagements and School Presentations:
I have three presentations centering around Arthurian Legend and Medieval times. The grade levels/programs can be modified for younger kids. When I worked with the Colorado Girl Scouts, we would do half-day workshops incorporating all of the workshops as well a few other writing activities.
Medieval Illumination Poetry (grade levels 2-8): Kids create their own illuminated Poetry Manuscripts using examples of my poetry. Poetry forms used are Haiku, Cinquain, and ABC. Poetry is illuminated by encasing the poems in colored patterns, pictures, etc.
Exploring Medieval Times (grade levels 1-8): Kids explore Medieval Times through posters presented depicting housing, jobs, food, and so forth. They fill out a worksheet and then decide whether or not they could live back then and explain why.
Writing Your Own Medieval Tale (grade levels K-8): Using the same outline I use when planning out my stories, kids will develop their own short story set in Medieval times. A lot of latitude is given to ‘Medieval’ here because writers are encouraged to make the story their own. They will leave with a workable outline.
I bring my fantasy background, a full size Unicorn standup, and a Sword in a Stone for kids to take pictures with and try their luck pulling out the sword. I encourage them to come dressed as princesses, dames, knights, kings, queens, etc.
I also do Literacy presentations for parents/PTSA.
