Eileen Hobbs, Children's Author
Writer of a fun, adventurous chapter book series about the Heath Cousins
Eileen Hobbs lives in Oklahoma with her husband, two sons, and two dogs. She teaches English composition to international students at a nearby university. She enjoys traveling, gardening, and spending time with her family. She grew up in Thailand, where her parents were missionaries. Her desire is to write books that have diverse characters and that take her readers to fictional places they might not otherwise get to explore in real life. The Heath Cousins are based on the growing up years of her children and their cousins.
The most important thing the author wants readers to gain from her books:
I want my readers to simply get lost in the adventure - to identify with one of my characters and imagine what it's like to be them. I also want them to think about certain concepts introduced in my stories such as: What are my special gifts? Why should we forgive? Finally, I want them to be curious - to look into ideas introduced in my books and to pursue them further such as the magic of other cultures and other languages.
Why the author is an authority on the subject of her books:
My books are based on my kids when they were younger and the "imaginary" adventures they had with their cousins. Also, I try to introduce other languages and cultures in my books, which are based on my own travels and my work teaching international students at the university level.
Speaking Engagements and School Presentations:
During my school visits, I love to read a section of my books and bring some type of "gift" to each student. For example, I will bring small stones that students can choose from, because in my first book, each character has a magical stone that gives them a special gift. I also hand out free bookmarks and ask for their ideas for characters for my next book. For example, one fan asked me to include a cat-like creature in my second book, which I ended up doing.
