Maggie van Galen, Children's Author

Award-winning children's author Maggie van Galen has read to over 4,000 children and hasn't lost one yet!

Maggie van Galen is the award-winning author of the Keeno and Ernest children’s book series. Growing up in Northern Michigan, she listened to her father’s stories, imagining characters, being transported to the locations and engaging in the plots.

Maggie has always written as a sort of escapism…writing poetry, studying journalism and creative writing in college. After graduating from Michigan State University in 1991, she entered the corporate world of sales and marketing. After the death of her father in 1995, and meeting the man of her dreams, Maggie moved to Boston to work for a marketing firm, but writing always pulled her back. She has published a book of poetry called An Inside Look…and wrote for a small-town New Hampshire newspaper. In 2000, she moved to London and worked at The Economist for 3 years and had 2 beautiful boys.

As happiness began shining in her personal life, the stories and words started to flow. After years of telling stories to her boys and their friends, Maggie decided to share them with the world. She truly hopes that you enjoy them too!  Maggie now lives with her family on the North Shore of Massachusetts.  You can learn more at

Speaking Engagements and School Presentations:

A typical presentation lasts 45 minutes to one hour.  I make it fun with a reading of the book(s), questions and answers, and fun stories.

Age Range & Group Size:

My presentation is appropriate for students from preschool through elementary school (the presentation is adapted for the younger audiences).  I have read to all different size groups, from 10 children to over 300.  For the larger presentations, I put the illustrations up on a screen and read with (or without) a microphone.  Depending on your school’s needs, I can do one large presentation or up to 5 sessions in one day.

Giving back to schools:

I always leave a signed copy of each book for your school’s library.

  • $50 per hour or per class

  • $300 for a full day

  • Plus Supplies (if crafts are done) and Travel expenses

An order form will be created for you to distribute to the students before and after my visit.  Any books purchased will be signed and delivered to your school.
