Shannon DeVivo, Children's Author and Professional Engineer
Professional engineer with a passion for inspiring children to reach their full potential
I received my bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and my master's degree in environmental engineering from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. While civil engineering is a broad category, I chose to focus on environmental engineering for its many opportunities to make a difference in the health and safety of people. I currently work on private and government environmental investigations.
The most important thing the author wants readers to gain from her books:
I love inspiring young students to achieve their full potential. There are so many students who feel that engineering is beyond their capabilities, but that's just not true. I have made it my life's mission to inspire young students to consider all the careers that a degree in engineering can lead to.
Why the author is an authority on the subject of her books:
As a professional engineer involved in many professional organizations, I've led hands-on activities with hundreds of students and have listened to the concerns parents have about getting their children interested in science, technology, engineering, or math careers. As an aunt to nine nieces and nephews, I understand what really grasps a child's interest is not what they learn in school, but the characters they're exposed to in their favorite books, movies, shows, etc. I've worked hard to mesh careers in engineering and sciences with characters that young girls can related to.
Speaking Engagements and School Presentations:
I currently give presentations related to environmental engineering. My presentations can be about a specific project that I have worked or about my background and how I became an engineer.
