Shirley Moulton, M.S, Award-Winning Children's Author
"Scary-Fun Adventures With a Cool Magic Moon"
Since I have retired from teaching, it has been a passion of mine to write fun, fantasy-adventure books for children which also promote positive character traits. My stories are not just fun and entertaining, they also have "substance." I am sensitive to the hopes, dreams, tender feelings, and struggles children experience. I hope to continue to make a positive difference in the lives of children through my writing. I have loved being a teacher, and I love being a mother and grandmother!
I have written a series of Magic Moon books for children, which have won awards from Purple Dragonfly Book Awards, The 11th National Indie Excellence Awards, and The Wishing Shelf Book Awards (UK).
Magic Moon, is a cool, quirky, gigantic, somewhat terrifying, alien “moon-like” being who likes puns and jokes when he’s not accidentally causing small earthquakes! He may grant two special requests with his magical powers if you are brave enough to face him! Magic Moon and his young friends from two worlds make a great team finding lost treasures, making new friends, rescuing those in danger, comforting those who are sad, dealing with bullies, and helping to save endangered species and Bears Ears National Monument!
The first two Magic Moon books are picture/chapter books with beautiful, colorful full-page illustrations, from 34 to 40 pages each, for children ages 4-9. The last three books are chapter books from 146 to 176 pages each, for children ages 7-11.
The most important thing the author wants readers to gain from her books:
I hope to inspire children to think of and be kind to others, to stand up to bullies, and to be considerate of animals and our environment. I have written Magic Moon children’s fantasy-adventure books to provide fun and interesting stories which promote these positive character traits.
Why the author is an authority on the subject of her books:
I have spent my entire career of over 35 years teaching special needs students including children with autism, learning disabilities, ADHD, emotional disturbances, and other health impairments. I have also worked for several additional years previously as a paraprofessional with adults with mental and physical disabilities, and with preschool children. I have worked with gifted children as well as with children in regular education. I believe that each child, whether classified with a disability or not, has many talents, abilities and gifts.
I have a Master of Science degree in Special Education (Behavior Disorders) and two Bachelor of Arts degrees, one in Special Education and one in Psychology, from the University of Utah.
I believe my experience with children has given me understanding, insight and compassion into the lives of children. Our children are precious. Each child has great potential for good in our world.
Speaking Engagements and School Presentations:
My presentations for elementary school children (Grades K-5) last between 45 minutes and 1 hour 15 minutes, which includes a 30 minute “movie!”*
Magic Moon: The Journey movie has two parts. Part I: “The Ideas, the Inspiration, and the Books.” Part II: “What is it really like being an Author?” An additional Part III: A short, fun “Grammar and Punctuation Quiz” (optional) may be shown with the movie or as a separate slide show (7-8 minutes). I answer students’ questions after the presentation. I am also developing additional 15 min. lessons which tie into areas of the Utah Core Curriculum in Social Studies and Library Media.
I love interacting with children and have had really fun experiences during my previous presentations. I will travel within the Salt Lake Valley area from Layton, Utah to Provo, Utah. There is no charge for the presentation, but I may require that you purchase the five Magic Moon Children’s books at my cost ($25 for the set of 5 books) for your school or class library. Note: Retail cost for the five-book set is $42.95.
Ratings of my previous presentations from school classes are available upon request.
*The presentation for Kindergarten and First Grade is shortened to 30-45 minutes.
