"Scary-Fun Adventures With a Cool Magic Moon"
Since I have retired from teaching, it has been a passion of mine to write fun, fantasy-adventure books for children which also promote positive character traits. My stories are not just fun and entertaining, they also have "substance." I am sensitive to the hopes, dreams, tender feelings, and struggles children experience. I hope to continue to make a positive difference in the lives of children through my writing. I have loved being a teacher, and I love being a mother and grandmother!
I have written a series of Magic Moon books for children, which have won awards from Purple Dragonfly Book Awards, The 11th National Indie Excellence Awards, and The Wishing Shelf Book Awards (UK).
Magic Moon, is a cool, quirky, gigantic, somewhat terrifying, alien “moon-like” being who likes puns and jokes when he’s not accidentally causing small earthquakes! He may grant two special requests with his magical powers if you are brave enough to face him! Magic Moon and his young friends from two worlds make a great team finding lost treasures, making new friends, rescuing those in danger, comforting those who are sad, dealing with bullies, and helping to save endangered species and Bears Ears National Monument!
The first two Magic Moon books are picture/chapter books with beautiful, colorful full-page illustrations, from 34 to 40 pages each, for children ages 4-9. The last three books are chapter books from 146 to 176 pages each, for children ages 7-11.
The most important thing the author wants readers to gain from her books:
I hope to inspire children to think of and be kind to others, to stand up to bullies, and to be considerate of animals and our environment. I have written Magic Moon children’s fantasy-adventure books to provide fun and interesting stories which promote these positive character traits.
Why the author is an authority on the subject of her books:
I have spent my entire career of over 35 years teaching special needs students including children with autism, learning disabilities, ADHD, emotional disturbances, and other health impairments. I have also worked for several additional years previously as a paraprofessional with adults with mental and physical disabilities, and with preschool children. I have worked with gifted children as well as with children in regular education. I believe that each child, whether classified with a disability or not, has many talents, abilities and gifts.
I have a Master of Science degree in Special Education (Behavior Disorders) and two Bachelor of Arts degrees, one in Special Education and one in Psychology, from the University of Utah.
I believe my experience with children has given me understanding, insight and compassion into the lives of children. Our children are precious. Each child has great potential for good in our world.
Speaking Engagements and School Presentations:
My 45 minutes to 1 hour author presentation for the Magic Moon children’s book series is for elementary school children (Grades K-5) and includes a 32 minute “movie!”*
Magic Moon: The Journey movie has two parts: Part I: “The Ideas, the Inspiration, and the Books.” Part II: “What is it Really Like Being an Author?” I answer students’ questions after the presentation. I am also developing additional 15 min. lessons which may tie into areas of the Utah Core Curriculum in Social Studies and Library Media.** Additional short, fun 7-8 minute slideshows (“Grammar & Punctuation Quiz” and “Story Ideas”) are also available.
I love interacting with children, and I’ve had fun experiences during my previous author presentations. I will travel within a one-hour commute from West Jordan, Utah. There is no charge for the presentation. I may give a free set of the 5 Magic Moon books (retail value $42.95) for your school or class library (while supplies last, or you may buy a set from me for $25), and I may have additional books your students may win at a drawing. I may travel further distances if my travel and lodging expenses are paid for!
Average ratings of my previous author presentations from children are 4.8 (2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders) and 4.0 (5th graders).
Feel free to share “Magic Moon: The Journey" 13 min. video on YouTube, which includes excerpts from each book.
*The presentation for Kindergarten and First Grade is shortened to 30-45 minutes, and I will read Magic Moon: A Young Boy’s Journey (Vol. 1) to your class.
**Please email me prior to scheduling the author presentation if you would like me to present a 15-minutes lesson, which may tie into the Utah Core Curriculum.
