Tevin Hansen, Children's Author, Illustrator, and Musician
Who knew authors could rock?
Tevin Hansen is the author or illustrator of more than 20 books for children, from picture books to middle grade adventures. He has won national awards for Yam Hill (middle grade sci-fi), The Thumb Book of Kindness (non-fiction), and Cinderella's Other Shoe (humorous chapter book). A songwriter, musician and skateboarder, Tevin is a high-energy performer who encourages audience participation. He lives in Lincoln, Nebraska and presents across the Midwest at libraries, schools, bookstores, and community centers.
The most important thing the author wants readers to gain from his books:
I want young readers to have fun reading my books. When I was young, reading was a chore that took more focus than I could muster most days. But when I discovered Roald Dahl, everything changed. I found that I actually liked reading. Do I sneak in the occasional lesson into my books? Sure, but it's surrounded by engaging characters, challenging situations, and lots of humor. I hope that kids laugh out loud and want to read more.
Why the author is an authority on the subject of his books:
I've written or illustrated over 20 books. I love books so much that I started a children's publishing house with my wife. I'm also a founder and editor for the middle grade/YA magazine, Stinkwaves.
Awards:
Yam Hill (Next Generation Indie Book Award, honorable mention, science fiction), The Thumb Book of Kindness (Purple Dragonfly, honorable mention), Cinderella's Other Shoe (Purple Dragonfly winner, humor)

Speaking Engagements and School Presentations:
I love doing school visits and speaking engagements. I always incorporate a specific book that fits the needs of the school or library. Each presentation revolves around a central theme. We might talk about kindness and positive thinking with The Thumb Book Series, or discuss bullying with Alexia Versus the Birthday Bear, or use the Junkyard Adventures series to help kids explore their own imagination.
By combining reading, music, and audience participation, you can watch the venue come alive! I also have more low-key workshops and presentations that revolve around editing and writing, illustration, and book-making. Generally, these do not include music, but offer attendees a chance to dive into publishing.
