Zachary Astrowsky, Teen Author of Children's Sci-Fi Novel

Teen Author of a MG/Teen/YA Sc-fi Novel

At the age of fourteen, I recently completed my first novel, which I began at the age of ten. Writing has become my passion, but I have always been an avid reader. I excel in all my classes, especially my Honors English class. Last year, I wrote, directed, and starred in a video about the Fourth Amendment, winning first place in the Mayor’s Constitutional Contest. This year I have been asked to join the National Junior Honor Society and was recently elected President of the group.

Outside of school, I enjoy playing sports and performing in musical theatre. I have been involved in two professional theatre productions — Carousel and A Christmas Story — and received two National Youth Award nominations for my role as the villain, Lord Farquaad, in Shrek (2016) and as the drummer, Freddy Hamilton, in School of Rock (2017). Last year, I was selected to perform at Carnegie Hall for the NY Pops Gala, which was an unbelievable experience.

The most important thing the author wants readers to gain from his book:

I am hoping my book will motivate people to read. Reading is Fundamental (RIF), the nation's leading organization for children's literacy, has partnered with me and together our hope is to encourage children to read more often.

Why the author is an authority on the subject of his book:

My book is about three teenagers who come together in the aftermath of a striking revelation, and attempt to fight back against “the controlled” — the majority around them that has been secretly implanted with a tracking and brainwashing device. The fight seems hopeless until the main character realizes that he has the ability to see the future, and the kids devise a plan to outwit the leader of the controlled, who can also see the future.

What makes my novel interesting and extremely timely is that it’s theme of tracking citizens, and even brainwashing them, is not just futuristic science fiction. On Thursday, August 10, 2017, USA Today ran a story titled, “You will get chipped — eventually,” predicting that chipping of employees by companies will be normal in 50 years’ time.

The Uncontrolled is an action-packed adventure set against the loss of free will that comes from a tracking chip that also enables a company or person to alter the desires and actions of its unsuspecting recipient.
