A Passion for Justice

Veteran attorney, civil justice advocate, and author Mark M. Bello is a media source for social justice advocacy and education.

Americans’ legal rights are under attack—when people’s civil liberties are trampled, Mark M. Bello, a veteran attorney and author of legal thrillers, is ready to jump into the struggle. These days he’s finding plenty to fight—and to write—in his work as a novelist, blogger, and expert on our civil justice system. Bello has over 40 years experience and was one of the first attorneys to sue the Catholic Church over its cover-up of clergy abuse.

Bello draws upon those 40-plus years as a litigator and advocate as author of the award-winning Zachary Blake Betrayal series of legal thriller novels. Through his “ripped from the headlines” novels, he takes readers deep into the courtroom fights to protect our most precious rights. Whether he’s calling out racist cops for harassing and shooting law-abiding citizens of color, taking on school systems and gun manufacturers, exposing corruption in religious or political scandals, or hammering the government's latest attack on immigrants, Bello doesn’t pull punches.

“People's rights are being drastically eroded by government, political, and corporate greed and influence, and most citizens remain unaware of the harm being done,” he says. “I seek to increase public awareness that our precious constitutional civil and criminal rights are being eroded, and that may start as early as middle school.”

Inspired by a case he filed against the Catholic Church in the 1980s, Bello penned his first Zachary Blake novel, Betrayal of Faith. In the decades since, clergy abuse has become a worldwide scandal, and Bello continues to expose conspiracies and cover-ups. His second novel, Betrayal of Justice, tackles bigotry, white supremacy, and Islamophobia in a prophetic novel about a bigoted president, a Muslim woman wrongfully accused of murder, and a deeply divided country that has forgotten the meaning of “liberty and justice for all.” Bello’s third book, Betrayal in Blue, follows the efforts of a dedicated law officer to foil a terrorist plot by a white supremacist group. His fourth book, Betrayal in Black, tackles the case of an African-American man wrongfully shot during a traffic stop and offers sensible solutions to one of America's most serious social justice issues. His fifth book, Betrayal High, focuses upon the root causes of school shootings, from bullying, to easy access to guns, to greed and corrupt politicians who protect the corrupt rather than their constituents. His sixth book, Supreme Betrayal, examines the #MeToo movement and speaking truth to power. His novella, L'Dor V'Dor—From Generation to Generation, a Zachary Blake 'prequel' is a Holocaust era tale of young Zachary's grandfather's harrowing escape from Auschwitz.

In his books, articles, and blogs at www.markmbello.com, www.notfakenews.biz, and www.legalexaminer.com, Bello draws from news and current events to discuss how our legal and political systems should respond. As he calls out abuses of power of all kinds, he empowers readers, the media, and ordinary citizens to fight for their rights as guaranteed under the Constitution. What do we want this country to stand for? What should this country stand for? “Citizens are quite divided on these issues and I feel a responsibility to push them in a pro-justice, pro-citizen direction.”

When Bello is not writing or speaking out, he enjoys spending time with his wife, four children, and eight grandchildren.

Speaking Engagements and School Presentations:

I teach the importance of a fair and impartial justice system. After all, if the system is unfair to its weakest members, it is unfair to all and adverse to what American democracy is all about. The 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th Amendments (very few people are familiar with the 7th) are more important today than ever before. I also offer a wonderful PowerPoint presentation for late middle school, early high school students, studying and comparing my recent novel, Betrayal in Black, with two other contemporary novels, The Hate You Give and To Kill a Mockingbird. I have also written two children's books: one on districted driving auto safety, and the other on bullying. I do presentations at K-3 level on those topics.
